Cul de Canard, usually shortened to CDC, is a soft feather from around a duck’s preen gland. Its fine structure makes it useful for small dry flies and emergers where a light wing or sparse dressing is needed.
This Turrall bulk bag is listed as 3g. Select the colour from the current options, then choose individual feathers for the shape and size of each fly. Natural feathers vary in length, density and colour, so the bag is not a fixed count of identical feathers.
Use the amount of CDC required by the pattern and avoid crowding the hook with unnecessary wraps. Choose the hook and thread with the intended surface presentation in mind. For a more rigid dry-fly hackle, compare selected cock hackles rather than expecting CDC to perform the same role.
