Choose materials for the fly you want to tie
Dry flies and terrestrials
Keep the body proportionate to the hook and the fly’s supporting materials. Foam can contribute buoyancy to beetles and other terrestrials; a slim quill or floss body creates a different silhouette. Avoid adding unnecessary bulk at tie-in points or filling the hook gape.
Nymphs and wet flies
Decide whether the pattern needs a smooth, segmented or fibrous body. Floss and quill-like materials provide a defined surface, while dubbing offers texture. A wire rib can add segmentation and protection, but also changes weight and bulk. Choose the hook and any bead separately for the pattern.
Streamers and baitfish
Hollow braid can build a broader body profile without a solid core. Match its size to the intended silhouette and secure the ends neatly. Yarn, fibres and other synthetics provide different amounts of movement; more material does not always produce a better swimming fly.
Choose the right materials section
This is a broad body-materials range. For a specific technique, the established Dubbing, Chenille & Fritz, Wire and Feathers & Quills sections are often the quickest route. We keep those existing ranges separate rather than creating duplicate categories. Check each product for pack size, colour and dimensions.
